WhatsApp privacy policy

Some weeks ago, the news of WhatsApp Privacy Policy took the internet by storm and alot of WhatsApp users were in a state of pandemonium over what WhatsApp and Facebook intends to do. Of course, as you would expect, alot of WhatsApp users abandoned the platform and fled as fast as their legs could carry them.

Telegram, Signal and even the long abandoned 2go application gained alot of users in Nigeria and possibly other parts of the world in a couple of days. We witnessed alot of uproar and disagreements across Facebook. Meme pictures questioning the true intentions of the reasons behind the update of WhatsApp privacy policy were posted on both Facebook and WhatsApp statuses by users. WhatsApp Privacy Policy Update – Four Things You need to know about the New WhatsApp Privacy Policy

1. End-to-end encrypted: Even with the new update on WhatsApp Privacy Policy, private messages for individuals are still end-to-end encrypted and according to WhatsApp, such private messages can only be accessed the individuals in the conversation.

2. WhatsApp new update doesn't cover an End-to-end encryption for WhatsApp business accounts: Unlike private message/chats for individuals, the new WhatsApp Privacy Policy Update will not cover an end-to-end encryption for any WhatsApp business account. When individuals chat or message business accounts, the conversion between the client (individual) and business owner will not be end-to-end encrypted and as such the data acquired during their conversation will be used for commercial purposes.

Commercial purposes like targeting of ads on Facebook will need data from such conversations to successfully target the right individuals while serving the Facebook ads. Some of the data will also be stored on Facebook servers.

3. Your messages and personal information will not be sold to companies: There is a misconception that WhatsApp intends to sell individual data to companies and make money from it. Lol.

Well, this is laughable and I find it laughable because if they had wanted to do that, they would have done it a long time ago, even without your consent. But, why will WhatsApp or Facebook want to sell your private messages/information? For what? Are you Elon Musk or Dangote? Lol.

I don't mean to mock you, but the bitter truth is this; “the privacy of your smart phone is an illusion”. There are somany tricks that can be played on a smartphone, especially by big tech or tech giants. You should have known that before now. So chill and use your messaging apps without worrying.

4. Users who fail to accept WhatsApp New Privacy Policy will lose their accounts: Yes, it is true. WhatsApp Privacy Policy is set to be updated on the 15th of May, 2021. Don't fret, you won't lose your WhatsApp account on the 15th of May. You will only lose it if you fail to accept the new Privacy Policy after 21days.

From the 15th of May, WhatsApp users will be told to accept the new Privacy Policy update, which every user must do to have full access to WhatsAapp. This will be done with an in App ads banned displaying the policy in clear sentences.

Check below for what WhatsApp has to say about users who will fail to accept the New WhatsApp Privacy Policy update;

“For a short time, these users will be able to receive calls and notifications, but will not be able to read or send messages from the App” WhatsApp siad.
