Yahoo Leaves China – Here are their Reasons for Leaving

Yahoo Leaves China

The business environment in China has become too challenging for the Yahoo company in China and as a result of these emerging challenges, the company announced its departure from China two days ago. This is happening for the first time since Yahoo began its operations and business in China since 1998.

According to a statement published on Yahoo website, the company completely stopped providing its services in mainland China, on the 1st of November, 2021. On the other hand, Chinese local media reported Yahoo's move two days ago.

Here is what a Yahoo reporter told Reuters yesterday; “In recognition of the increasingly challenging business and legal environment in China, Yahoo’s suite of services will no longer be accessible from mainland China as of November 1. Yahoo remains committed to the rights of our users and a free and open internet. We thank our users for their support”.

It is important to recall that Linkedln discontinued their services in China last month, while also complaining of the very challenging business environment inherent in China. Linkedln also went further to mention that meeting the business requirements in China is very tasking, and challenging.

This move by Yahoo is not entirely surprising for most observers. China increased its business demands and requirements. Again, Yahoo has been gradually reducing its services in China over the past few years. This outcome is probably a calculated one, it's not a mistake.

Yahoo first entered China and began its business in the country in 1998. 14 years later, Yahoo went into agreement with the  Alibaba company to sell its stake in the e-commerce giant. This business agreement gave Alibaba the legal right to run the Yahoo China business under the Yahoo umbrella for over four years.

The complete discontinuation of Yahoo services in China came immediately after Beijing imposed new restrictions on Yahoo in areas that concerned Chinese new laws and customer privacy. On the 1st of November, 2021, a new law in China targeted at protecting the privacy of online users in China took effect. Perhaps, Yahoo as a company may not be able to keep to these new Chinese laws and hence, they discontinued their services in China.
